Learning through play is a fundamental part of a child’s Early Years development. As a teacher for 10 years spanning from Early Years, Key Stage 1 and 2 I have seen the importance of play for all children.
Play does not have to be expensive or fancy, there are various ways that children can learn through play at home.
Here are some points to consider:
Your child’s interests
Do you know what your child enjoys playing with or doing? You can incorporate their interest at home, by observing what they use and if they can, tell you what they like to play with. My son enjoys using Lego, so I have provided a space for him to access his Lego whenever he wants to play.
Is there space for your child to play?
Think about the space within your home. We all live in different type of homes. However, children are happy when they know there is a space for them to play. It does not have to be a large space, just enough for them to enjoy their learning through play. To make the space fun and exciting, you can create a den with blankets or place a coloured piece of material on the floor.

Be creative
Children have a creative side, we just need to provide the opportunity for them to do so.. If your child loves making things or junk modelling, provide them with an arts and craft box. Does your child enjoy storytelling? If so, they can role play and dress up as different characters. Tap into your child’s creative side you will be amazed at what they can do.
Sensory play
I warn you this can be messy, but messy play is fun! You can use water play in a plastic container and colour the water with paint. Use food items from your kitchen, such as rice, lentils or pasta. Exploring different textures and materials. Your little one can add their favourite toys to their play.
Have fun
With learning through play it is all about having fun, making memories and enjoying learning. Learning does not have to be boring, you just need to tap into what your child likes to do.
One thing I would like all parents to know, is that learning through play is not expensive, so go on an adventure within your home and see what you can find.
All the best,
